Vrah Kongur is the second highest peak in the Belasitsa Mountains - 1951 m above sea level.
Belasitsa Mountains is a range in southwestern Bulgaria that forms a natural border with Greece. It's highest peak, Radomir, reaches 2,029 meters above sea level. The region is characterized by its rich biodiversity and rare plant species. The mountains are a popular destination for hiking and mountaineering, with several mountain huts and trails. The Belasitsa Nature Park, established in 2004, preserves the unique natural and cultural heritage of the region.
On a clear day, Vrah Kongur offers a beautiful panoramic view. To the south, towards Greece, you can see the Butkovska Valley with the Struma River and Lake Kerkini.
To the west are the peaks of Punkova Skala and Debelyo Bardo, behind which is the first peak, Peak Radomir (2029 m above sea level).
To the north is the valley of the Strumeshnitsa River, behind which are the southern slopes of the Ograzhden Mountain. In the northeast distance, part of Rila is visible, and next to it is the Pirin Mountain range. In the foothills of the last mountain, towards the Struma Valley, one could see the Melnik Pyramids.
To the east is the Sengelska Mountain with some wind turbines standing on its slopes. Behind it Ali Botush Mountains is visible, and next to it, in the distance, are the cut-off slopes of the karst Bozdag Mountain.
Peak Kongur rises to the south of the town of Petrich. Two routes for climbing the peak start from the town of Petrich - through the Kongur Hut and through Paprenitsa (a semi-destroyed former checkpoint located on the ridge east of the Luda Mara River - Petrichka River).
The route through the hut is shorter, taking about 5-6 hours, with roughly 1700 m of net uphill gain. There are two variations of this route - one marked with yellow markings and the other with red markings. To make the ascent shorter one could drive to the Belasitsa Hut and continue on foot following the red markings.
The route through Paprenitsa is confusingly also marked with white-yellow-white markings. In this case, thought, the trail head is located east of the river that flows trought the tawn. The walk takes about 7-8 hours. to the Belasitsa Hill located east of the Kongur peak.
