The BAK shelter is located under a large overhanging rock between the peaks of Orlovets, Zliya Zab, Lovnitsa, and Kamilata. Its name is often used for the nearby Orlovets (Granite Water) shelter. It was built in 1934 by members of the Bulgarian Alpine Club to serve as temporary shelter for alpinists, skiers, and tourists during bad weather. Inside, there is room for a few people, and the accommodations are quite primitive – wooden grates are placed on the floor, and that is the extent of the comfort.
When it is not covered in snow, the shelter is visible from the marked path from Malyovitsa hut to the Granite Water (Orlovets) shelter. It is located to the right of the elevation where the new shelter is built, near the path marked with stone pyramids, which branches off from the main trail in a flat section just before the final ascent (you'll recognize the spot by the stone mass).
The starting point for the BAK shelter is the Central Mountain School Malyovitsa, which can be reached by car or shuttle from the town of Samokov. If you are driving, there is a paid parking lot at the beginning of the complex and a second free one slightly higher up, just above the building of the former Central Mountain School. The shuttles from Samokov run twice a day – in the morning at 8:15 AM and in the afternoon at 4:15 PM (for the latest schedule, it's best to call the Samokov bus station at 0722/6-65-40).
From the Central Mountain School Malyovitsa, the path to the BAK shelter is the same as the one leading to the nearby Orlovets (Granite Water) shelter – the trail goes up the Malyovitsa River valley. To the Malyovitsa hut (50 minutes) the route follows a dirt road, then continues to the Second Terrace (30 minutes) along a path marked with red line markings. At the rock with memorial plaques for fallen alpinists and mountaineers, turn left following the blue markings, and crossing the southwestern slope of Mount Kamilata, you will reach the shelter in about an hour.
